Prop Bets Explained
A prop bet is a side bet placed on an event that isn’t dependent on the game’s final outcome. “Prop bet” is short for “Proposition bet”, the wager’s full and correct name.
Popular March Madness Props
Popular March Madness prop bets are for whether a particular event will occur or not. One side of the bet will be “Yes”, the other side “No”. The sportsbook will offer odds for each outcome. For example, will a March Madness game go to overtime – choose “Yes” or “No”.
Other props include team performance outcomes. Each team will be a side. For example, which team will be the first to score 10 points – choose a team you think will reach 10 points first.
Another popular game prop is for the score at the end of the 2nd half. Each team will be a side, with a “Tie” or “Draw” as a third option. In this case, you’re betting on a particular team to win, or for the game to be tied and go into overtime. This bet works just like a 3-way moneyline.
Note that many prop bets are related to each other. With the 2nd half result prop bet, the odds for “Tie” may have some relationship with the “Yes” odds for the game to go into overtime.
Finally, some March Madness prop bets include a performance line, or handicap, with odds for over and under. For example, will a team’s point total be over or under 34.5 points – bet over or under just like a total bet.

When do Sports Betting Sites Publish March Madness Prop Bets?

Taking the Underdog or Less Likely Result
The underdog – or less likely result – will have a plus sign before its moneyline value. A plus number indicates how much you win for risking $100.
Note that a prop bet with 3 or more sides will have multiple plus moneylines. That means there’s no favored outcome. Instead, the lowest plus moneyline should be considered the most likely.
Taking the Favorite or More Likely Result
The favorite – or more likely result – will have a minus sign before its moneyline value. A minus number indicates how much you risk to win $100. With occasional exceptions, props will only have one side with a minus value. Occasionally, both sides of a prop with an over-under line may have minus value odds.

Decide whether the Duke vs Kentucky game will go to overtime. In this case, the -5000 “No” line suggests the game will not go to overtime.
Here’s what the moneyline values mean:
- +1000 for “Yes” means bettors risk $100 to win $1,000.
- -5000 for “No” means bettors risk $5,000 to win $100.

Bet on whether UConn’s team point total will be over or under the 61.5 line. The odds for this line closely resemble a common total bet on both teams’ combined point total. In this case, the higher -112 value suggests the under is more likely.
Here’s what the odds values mean:
- -108 for “over” means bettors risk $108 to win $100 that UConn’s point total will be 62 points or more.
- -112 for “No” means bettors risk $112 to win $100 that UConn’s point total will be 61 points or fewer.
- No push is possible since the betting line includes a half point value.

NCAA Betting Rules by State
NCAA betting rules vary by state. Some states prohibit player prop bets, while others only prohibit live or “in-game” player props. Other states prohibit betting on any in-state teams, or any NCAA competition hosted within state borders. Finally, other states do not have any NCAA betting restrictions, though the availability of NCAA prop bets will vary depending on where your sportsbook is located and their own internal policies.

- Tap through the matchup’s betting menu, select a prop to bet on.
Sportsbooks typically list a game’s prop bets on a separate menu. Select a prop to bet on.
- The odds values next to each side indicate risk and win amounts.
-110, or standard odds, means you risk $110 to win $100. Minus values indicate how much you risk to win $100. Plus values indicate how much you win if you risk $100.
- Your bet wins if you selected the correct outcome.
Sports betting sites will grade prop bets after the game has concluded, or after a prop’s game segment has concluded. Your bet wins if you selected the correct outcome. Prop bet outcomes do not necessarily depend on the game’s final outcome.
- Your bet ties or pushes if the result ties the prop bet line, or if no result can be determined.
Just like a total bet with a whole number line, a result that ties a prop bet line pushes. Your wager will be refunded. Additionally, if there’s no way to determine which side of a prop bet won, the sportsbook will cancel the bet and refund your wager.
